It's Going to Blow!

Today we did a GREAT science experiment!  It was perfect for 3 year olds!  Not confusing, not hard to understand, and very simple!!

First we got all the ingredients we needed: Vinegar, baking soda, food colouring, a pan, and syringes (If you have droppers, they would definitely work much better)

I then let the kids scoop out the baking soda out onto the pan (note: a pan with a lip is quite helpful in keeping the liquids contained!)

We then poured some vinegar in separate little bowls, and added a few drops of food colouring to each.  And then the fun began.  I let the kids 'suck' up the vinegar with the syringe and then squirt it onto the pan.  They didn't get what was so exciting about this until the first drop touched the baking soda.  And then "WOWWWWWW!!!!"  and "VOLCANOES"  and my favourite "IT IS GOING TO BLOW!!!"

The kids couldn't get over how much it bubbled when their colours hit the pan!  They were absolutely fascinated by it.  I had to refill the vinegar bowls 3 times!

Once we finally ran out of vinegar, Monkey was really interested in how the colours were mixing!  I got him a spoon and he started to mix them even more....and of course then the hands went in as well! (Like I said before, we are NOT afraid to get messy here!)

We did this for over 2 hours!  Monkey just loved the texture created by the vinegar and baking soda. He would try and build little mountains with the clumpy parts and then pour the liquid down the mountain!  This really was a great science lesson for the kids and they really started to grasp the action/reaction process!

We borrowed this idea from here

  3. I love the idea of adding food coloring to the vinegar!
